TOEFL Basics - What You Need to Know (12 Questions)

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an English proficiency test administered by ETS since 1964. It is accepted by 12,500+ institutions in 160+ countries worldwide, including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and all Ivy League universities.

The TOEFL iBT registration fee in India is ₹18,000 (incl. GST). Additional fees: Late Registration (₹3,320), Rescheduling (₹5,900), Additional Score Reports (₹2,300 each).

The TOEFL iBT exam is approximately 85 minutes total: Reading (~27-30 min, adaptive), Listening (~27-29 min, adaptive), Writing (~23 min), and Speaking (~8 min). No break between sections. The section order is Reading → Listening → Writing → Speaking.

TOEFL uses a 1-6 band scale in half-point increments (1.0, 1.5, 2.0 ... 6.0), aligned with the CEFR framework. Your overall score is the average of your four section band scores. During the 2026-2028 transition period, score reports also show a comparable score on the legacy 0-120 scale.

TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. After 2 years, scores expire and cannot be sent to institutions. Plan your test date based on application deadlines.

The new TOEFL iBT (launched January 21, 2026) features: 1-6 band scoring aligned with CEFR, adaptive testing for Reading and Listening, new task types including Listen & Repeat, Interview, Build a Sentence, and Write an Email. The test is ~85 minutes with AI-assisted scoring for Speaking and Writing. Results in 3 days.

MyBest scores combine your highest section scores from all valid TOEFL tests taken within 2 years. Automatically included on all score reports at no extra charge. If MyBest includes older tests on the 0-120 scale, those scores are converted to 1-6 bands for the calculation.

Yes, TOEFL iBT Home Edition allows you to take the test from home with ETS in-house proctors and AI-assisted identity verification (ENTRUST system). Same format and scoring as the test center version. Accepted by most universities but NOT for Australian visa. Canada study permit accepts Home Edition.

In India, only a valid Indian passport is accepted as ID for TOEFL. No other ID (Aadhaar, PAN, Driving License) is accepted. Passport must be physical, unexpired, and match registration name exactly.

You can take TOEFL unlimited times, but there must be minimum 3 days between test appointments. With MyBest scores, you can combine best section scores from multiple attempts within 2 years.

TOEFL scores are available in your ETS account within 3 days of the test date. PDF score reports are ready 1 day after electronic scores appear. Official reports to institutions take 4-8 business days via ETS Data Manager.

Reading and Listening use multistage adaptive design — each section has 2 modules, and the difficulty of the second module adjusts based on your performance in the first. This means the test adapts to your level, providing a more accurate score in less time.

TOEFL vs IELTS vs PTE - Comparison (10 Questions)

Difficulty depends on individual strengths. TOEFL is fully computer-based with adaptive Reading/Listening and AI scoring. Speaking is 8 minutes (Listen & Repeat + Interview). IELTS has face-to-face speaking (11-14 min). TOEFL is shorter (~85 min vs 2 hr 45 min). TOEFL uses American English.

TOEFL is traditionally preferred by US universities as it's American-made. Most US universities accept both, but TOEFL is the default choice. TOEFL's MyBest scores feature and CEFR-aligned bands are advantageous for US applications.

Both accepted for Canadian universities. For Canada PR: IELTS/CELPIP/PTE Core required (TOEFL Essentials approved by IRCC but not yet accepting scores). For student visa: TOEFL fully accepted via standard stream (SDS was discontinued Nov 2024).

PTE results come in 2 days, TOEFL in 3 days. Both are computer-based with AI scoring. TOEFL uniquely offers MyBest scores (superscoring) and adaptive testing. PTE uses a 10-90 scale; TOEFL uses 1-6 bands aligned with CEFR.

Yes, TOEFL has been re-accepted for Australian visas since May 5, 2024. IMPORTANT: Only TOEFL iBT Test Center results are accepted — Home Edition is NOT valid for Australian visa. When registering, you must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia'. 100% of Australian universities accept TOEFL.

TOEFL is more widely accepted, especially for USA and competitive programs. Duolingo is cheaper ($65 vs ₹18,000), faster results (48 hrs), and can be taken anytime from home. Both use adaptive testing. Check university acceptance before choosing.

In India: TOEFL ₹18,000, IELTS ₹18,000, PTE ₹18,900, Duolingo ~₹5,400. TOEFL offers MyBest scores, adaptive testing, and CEFR-aligned band scoring.

TOEFL speaking: 8 minutes total — Listen & Repeat (7 items, repeat sentences you hear) + Take an Interview (4 questions, 45 sec each, no prep time). IELTS speaking: 11-14 minutes face-to-face with examiner. TOEFL is shorter and computer-based; IELTS is more conversational.

For UK universities: Check individual requirements, many accept TOEFL. For UK student visa: TOEFL is NOT an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). You may need IELTS for visa compliance.

Only TOEFL offers MyBest scores (superscoring). IELTS and PTE report single test date scores only. MyBest combines highest section bands from all tests within 2 years — a unique TOEFL advantage accepted by many top universities.

Visa & Immigration - Critical Information (10 Questions)

Yes, TOEFL is fully accepted for USA F1 student visa if your university accepts TOEFL. Both test center and Home Edition scores are accepted. TOEFL is the preferred English test for USA.

Yes, TOEFL is accepted for Canadian study permit applications. The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was discontinued on November 8, 2024, so all applications now go through the standard stream where TOEFL is fully accepted.

Yes, TOEFL Home Edition is accepted for Canadian study permit applications. With SDS discontinued (November 2024), there is now only the standard stream, and TOEFL Home Edition is fully accepted for it.

Yes, TOEFL has been re-accepted for Australian visas since May 5, 2024. IMPORTANT: Only TOEFL iBT Test Center results are valid — Home Edition is NOT accepted for any Australian visa. When registering, select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' to ensure your result is valid.

TOEFL is NOT an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK student visas. Some UK universities accept TOEFL for admission, but you may need IELTS for visa. Check both university and UKVI requirements.

TOEFL Essentials was approved by IRCC in August 2025 but is NOT YET ACCEPTING scores for PR applications. Currently use IELTS, CELPIP, or PTE Core for Canada PR. IRCC will announce when acceptance begins.

TOEFL accepted for visa: USA (fully, both test center and Home Edition), Canada (fully), Australia (test center only, re-accepted May 2024), Germany, Netherlands, Singapore. NOT accepted: UK (not an approved SELT for visa).

TOEFL acceptance for work visas varies by country and employer. TOEFL is primarily designed for academic admissions. Check specific immigration requirements for work visas in your target country.

No fixed TOEFL score requirement for Canada student visa. Higher scores improve visa success rates. Band 4.0+ (80+ legacy) generally recommended. Meet your university's requirements and aim higher for visa confidence.

TOEFL Home Edition accepted for: USA (F1 visa), Canada (study permit). NOT accepted for: Australia (test center only since May 2024), UK (not an approved SELT). Always verify current requirements before booking.

University Score Requirements (8 Questions)

Harvard requires Band 5.0+ (100+ on legacy scale) for most programs. Harvard Divinity School: Band 5.0 for MDiv/MTS/MRPL, Band 5.5 for ThM. Competitive applicants typically score Band 5.0-5.5+. MyBest scores accepted by many Harvard programs.

MIT recommends Band 4.5+ (90+ legacy) for most programs but doesn't state official minimum. Competitive applicants typically score Band 5.0+. Check specific department requirements. IELTS 7.0 also accepted.

University of Toronto requires Band 4.5 (93 legacy overall). Tests must be within 24 months. MyBest scores NOT accepted by UofT — your single sitting score must meet all requirements.

UBC requires Band 4.5 (90 legacy overall). Some programs require higher. TOEFL Home Edition accepted. MyBest scores NOT accepted by UBC.

Oxford/Cambridge: Band 5.0+ (90-100+ legacy, varies by course). Russell Group universities: Band 4.5-5.0. Other UK universities: Band 4.0. Remember: TOEFL not accepted for UK visa, only for university admission.

Growing acceptance: many universities accept MyBest band scores. Notable exceptions: UofT and UBC do NOT accept MyBest. During the transition period (2026-2028), MyBest calculates using converted band scores from older attempts. Check ETS's searchable database or contact universities.

Band interpretation: 4.0 (Good — most universities), 4.5 (Very Good — top 100), 5.0 (Excellent — top 50, Ivy League), 5.5-6.0 (Outstanding — competitive scholarships). India average: Band 4.5 (94 legacy). During the transition, both band and legacy scores appear on reports.

Scholarship requirements vary widely. Top merit scholarships often require Band 5.0+ (100+ legacy). Competitive scholarships at top universities typically need Band 5.0-5.5. Some scholarships have no minimum but higher bands improve chances.

Section-Specific Tips & Strategies (10 Questions)

The Speaking section has 2 task types: Listen & Repeat (7 items — hear a sentence, repeat it exactly; focuses on pronunciation and fluency) and Take an Interview (4 questions, 45 sec each, no prep time; answer spontaneously on familiar topics). Practice clear pronunciation, natural pacing, and structured responses. No preparation time means you must think and speak simultaneously.

Writing has 3 tasks: Build a Sentence (unscramble words into correct sentences), Write an Email (7 min, respond to a real-life scenario), and Academic Discussion (10 min, contribute to a class discussion with your own opinion + reasons). Focus on grammar accuracy for Build a Sentence, appropriate tone for Email, and clear argumentation for Academic Discussion.

Reading is adaptive with 3 task types: Complete the Words (fill in missing letter halves in academic text), Read in Daily Life (short non-academic texts — emails, memos, posters), and Read an Academic Passage (~200 words + 5 MCQs). Build vocabulary, practice with varied text types, and manage time across the adaptive modules.

Listening is adaptive with 4 task types: Listen and Choose a Response (hear one sentence, pick the best reply), Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, and Listen to an Academic Talk. Practice with varied audio types, develop strong note-taking, and focus on main ideas and speaker intent.

For the Interview task (4 questions, 45 sec each), use a structured approach: state your opinion, give 1-2 reasons with examples, and wrap up. For Listen & Repeat (7 items), no template needed — focus on pronunciation, stress, and intonation. Practice speaking naturally without preparation time.

The Academic Discussion task (10 min) is in the Writing section: a professor poses a question, two students share opinions, and you write your own response (100+ words) with a clear opinion, reasons, and examples. It rewards clear argumentation and academic vocabulary.

Write an Email (7 min) is a new Writing task where you respond to a real-life scenario by writing an email. Focus on appropriate tone, clear structure, and addressing all parts of the prompt. It tests practical English communication skills.

Reading and Listening each have 2 modules. The first module is standard difficulty. Based on your performance, the second module adjusts — harder if you did well, easier if you struggled. This means the test adapts to your level, resulting in more accurate scoring in less time.

No, there is no negative marking in TOEFL. Always answer every question, even if unsure. Guessing gives you a chance to score; leaving blank guarantees zero points. No penalty for wrong answers.

Listen & Repeat: 8-12 seconds recording time per sentence (7 items total). Take an Interview: 45 seconds per response (4 questions), no preparation time. Total Speaking section: ~8 minutes. Practice responding spontaneously within time limits.
